When I'm next preaching regularly, I want to recruit a team of volunteers to assist with media use.
Illustrations and clips from movies and TV can be used to greatly improve effective communication (they can be overdone and wrongly used as well -- I'll be watching that line) but it is easy for a preacher's efforts to stay current with the culture to take an inordinate amount of time.
I'd want to form a media team along the following lines:
* I'd post an extended tentative preaching plan of topics that I anticipate preaching on.
* Each person would take one item or task -- something they'd be doing anyway -- such as watching a specific TV show, reading a specific magazine or website, listening to a particular podcast or radio program, or viewing an occasional movie or DVD -- and in their media consumption simply seek to be thoughtful and observant.
* When they encounter something that would illustrate a truth (one from the preaching plan or not) or that is informative about our culture, they would send me info -- when, where, how to find it, etc.
Done well, I think this would both improve my communication and increase ownership in the ministry.
